Where to find it: the number in most air pump model names is the airflow, so an HP-80 or an EL-80 gives about 80 L/min. It's also on your septic system's manual or the plate on the tank. Always match what your system's manufacturer specifies.

In an aerated system, the air pump pushes air down a line to a diffuser at the bottom of the aeration chamber. Fine bubbles keep the water full of oxygen, so aerobic bacteria can break waste down into clear, treated water that can be used to irrigate the garden. If the pump stops, those bacteria start to die off, the system turns septic and starts to smell, and most systems will sound an alarm.

Fish and pond bacteria need dissolved oxygen, and warm, still water holds very little of it. The air pump feeds air stones or diffusers on the bottom of the pond. The rising bubbles add oxygen and keep the water moving, which helps fish through hot summer nights and supports the bacteria that keep water clear. The pump sits outside the water, so only an air line goes into the pond.

Fish stocked closely together use oxygen fast, and in warm weather the water can run short within hours. The air pump feeds diffusers or air stones in each tank, raceway or pond, keeping dissolved oxygen up so fish stay healthy, feed well and grow. In hatcheries it also keeps water gently moving around eggs and fry. Because the pump sits outside the water and runs around the clock on low power, one pump can serve several tanks through a manifold.
