Service your pump

Pick your model to see the signs it needs a service and the genuine parts it takes. We can service it for you, too.

Important safety information

Linear air pumps run on mains power and have very strong magnets inside. Servicing should only be done by someone experienced. If in doubt, send us an enquiry.

  • Unplug it firstAlways switch off and unplug at the wall before you open the pump or touch anything inside.
  • Never touch inside with the power onDon't run the pump with the cover off, and never reach in while it's plugged in.
  • Never add oilHiblow pumps are oil-free. Oil or grease damages the diaphragms and valves.
  • Let it cool downThe pump gets warm when it's been running. Give it a few minutes before you handle it.
  • Strong magnets insideTake off your watch, and keep phones and bank cards away. If you have a pacemaker or other medical implant, don't service it yourself.
  • Keep it dryNever handle the plug or pump with wet hands, and don't hose or spray it down.
  • Don't pull the electrics apartOnly do the jobs in this guide. If the power cord or plug is damaged, stop and have it fixed by a licensed electrician or send it to us.
  • Use genuine parts onlyLookalike parts may not fit properly, and a poor fit can damage the pump.

This guide is for reference only. Hiblow Australia isn't responsible for damage or injury caused by incorrect servicing.

Enquire about a service

When to service it

  • Check and clean the air filter regularly.
  • Replace the diaphragms and valves when the air gets weaker or the pump gets louder. How often depends on how the system is looked after.
  • Always replace both chamber blocks at the same time.

What's wrong with my pump?

Find what you're noticing, then see why it happens and what's usually needed.

Weaker air or fewer bubbles

A dirty filter starves the pump of air. If the filter is clean, the diaphragms and valves have usually worn and can't push as much air. It's also worth checking the pipes and diffuser for leaks or blockages.

What's usually needed

Parts: Air filter, chamber block kit

Louder than usual, or rattling

Worn diaphragms buzz and flap, and a blocked filter makes the pump strain. Make sure it's sitting level and not touching a wall or anything else.

What's usually needed

Parts: Air filter, chamber block kit

Stopped by itself

When a diaphragm wears through, the safety switch cuts the power to protect the pump. The safety screw snaps when this happens, so it needs replacing too.

What's usually needed

Parts: Chamber block kit (includes the safety screw)

Hissing or air leaking from the cover

The cover packing seals the housing. If it's squashed, torn or wasn't seated properly, air escapes around the edge instead of going down the line.

How a service is done

From the Hiblow manual, for reference. If you're not confident, send it to us.

Job 1

Clean the filter

About 5 minutes

  1. Unplug the pump and let it cool.
  2. Lift the filter cover up from one side.
  3. Tap the dust off the filter, or wash it in mild detergent and let it dry out of the sun.
  4. Put the filter back and press the cover down until it sits flat.

You'll need: A new air filter if it's torn or black.

Job 2

Open the pump

About 5 minutes

  1. Undo the 4 bolts in the corners.
  2. If the housing is stuck, lever it gently at the air outlet with a flat screwdriver.
  3. Still stuck? Tap the outlet with a rubber mallet, never a metal hammer.
  4. Lift the housing off and take out the silencer.

You'll need: New cover packing if the seal is damaged.

Job 3

Swap the chamber blocks

About 20 minutes

  1. Take off your watch first. The magnets inside are very strong.
  2. Pull the L-tubes off, then undo the 4 screws on each casing.
  3. Undo the nut, slide one block off and pull the rod out with the other. Don't knock the safety switch.
  4. Fit the new blocks with the new nuts, keep the gaps even, then refit the casings and tubes.

You'll need: A genuine chamber block kit. Always do both sides.

Job 4

Reset the safety screw

About 5 minutes

  1. If the pump stopped by itself, the safety screw has snapped.
  2. Remove every broken piece so nothing is left near the magnets.
  3. Thread the new screw through the lever, then the spring contact.
  4. Tighten the nut until it spins freely, then stop.

You'll need: The new safety screw comes in the chamber block kit.
